Living Out Our Values: Intentional Time Off to Power Our People

At The Garage Group, our team is all in. We “squeeze the juice” out of every day, showing up with a strong sense of purpose, insatiable curiosity, and an unrelenting drive to deliver meaningful results. Delivering work at this pace can be a grind. And, taking time and space to recharge is hard. The reality is, when our tanks are depleted, we can’t help others.

We have committed to run a ‘people-first’ company. In this case, that commitment means taking every opportunity to embrace team self-care. Whether it’s full permission for a team member to share when they need a beat to “put their own oxygen mask on first” or at times when it’s really needed, carving out space for company-wide time off.

This year, we are taking the week of Thanksgiving off as a team – to rest, recharge, and enable each of us to fill our cups back up, in whatever ways are most true to each individual team member.

“An extended Thanksgiving break allows our team to recharge through family traditions, holiday movies, cooking, baking, and quality time with loved ones. This extra time helps us be more present and perhaps get ahead of the holiday rush. As a women-owned business, we recognize the added pressure on our team members during this busy season, and providing extra space is one way of showing gratitude for all they do throughout the year.”
— Megan Milar, CEO

Research proves downtime and intentional breaks enhance creativity, unlocks greater productivity, and increases job satisfaction. We are not the first to make moves like this in service of our people! For instance, REI’s #OptOutside campaign encourages consumers and employees to spend Black Friday outdoors instead of shopping, reflecting their commitment to well-being and the environment. Similarly, companies like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart have also closed on Thanksgiving to allow employees to spend time with their families. These decisions highlight the importance of prioritizing employee well-being and engaging in the value of rest and restoration.

At The Garage Group, we are committed to leading by example and showing that taking care of our people is the smartest business decision we can make. It’s about fostering a culture where our team feels valued and empowered to bring their best selves to work. And, it’s a tangible act of gratitude to our team’s commitment to our work.

We wish you a restorative Thanksgiving, and we’ll see you December!
